Maya Gabeira in Hawaii 2009 - Trailer
Maya Gabeira is the First Lady of big-wave surfing. To earn this title she had to conquer her greatest fear – her terror of gigantic waves. What does the life of a first lady look like? No coffee mornings in the White House for her, but lots of bruises, scars and a nose that has been broken 12 times! She was 14 when she climbed on her first surfboard. Just four years later the Brazilian girl, coached by big-surf legend Carlos Burle, tackled her first giant waves. Hawaii is her second home. Maya's day starts at 5 and she rides the big waves until sunset. Our camera watches Maya at home and in training with her male colleagues; it follows her to the island's legendary beaches and leaves no doubt how hard it is to make it to the top in this tough sport.
